Digital: Kenya Explores Opportunities with Thailand

(Ecofin Agency) – Since President William Ruto came to power in 2022, Kenya has established itself as a key player in the continent’s digital transformation. As part of this strategy, the authorities are forging numerous strategic partnerships to support this momentum.

Kenya is intensifying its efforts to strengthen its international digital partnerships. William Kabogo Gitau, Minister of Information, Communications and Digital Economy, announced on Saturday, April 4, the launch of an initiative to connect Kenyan and Thai technology companies, marking a new stage in cooperation between the two countries.

Held in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, the event brought together a delegation of 14 ICT companies from Thailand and more than 50 local Kenyan businesses. The stated objective is to foster concrete collaborations through “business matching” sessions, enabling stakeholders from both ecosystems to identify opportunities for investment, technological partnerships, or the co-development of digital solutions.

“On the sidelines of this meeting, we held a bilateral meeting to explore key areas of cooperation, including ICT development, particularly in urban areas, trade and investment promotion, tourism, the creative economy, and agriculture,” the minister stated.

This initiative aligns with the Kenyan authorities’ strategy to support the country’s digital economy with the backing of the ICT and trade departments, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Kenya’s technology ecosystem is among the most advanced on the continent, and local startups attract significant capital each year. In 2023, they raised USD 335 million, in 2024 USD 221 million, and in 2025 USD 1 billion, according to data from Partech Africa.

Through this partnership, Nairobi seeks to diversify its technology partners by turning to Asia, while consolidating its position as a leading digital hub. The country had also forged closer ties with Singapore, India, and the European Union to support its digital transformation.
